Great website.  I believe my class was the first kindergarten class at Madison (RHS class of 66).  My kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Hansen.  I always talked too much during rest time so she would put me under the water fountain in the classroom away from others so I couldn't talk.
Remember: MissVan Doren, she also gave piano lessons from her house, having to go into the hallway to "duck and cover" for air raid drills,  Leroy Potts as principal, chow mein on Tuesdays and fish with tomatoes or cream corn on Fridays.
Then on to the RHS for Junior High and split sessions.

I believe that Andrea is the brother of Ron Hollander who was part of my class, 62.  If memory serves me right they lived on Lake Ave close to St George next to Don Jackson-62. The Hollander''s father, was he not a  chiropodist?  Why can I remember this and don't know how I got into my office. jcl

Responding to interest and requests by alumni from many different decades, we are looking to expand the web site to be more inclusive.

First, we've created Photo Albums from the 1960s through the 2000s; you can now upload your photos directly to the web site.  Just follow the prompts when you open the Photo Albums page.

Second, we welcome participation and involvement in the Archives Committee by anyone who would like to coordinate/oversee a "Decade " Page.  If you're interested, email me at

Tribute to Mr. Palisi.

If I remember correctly(which at age 66 is really asking alot), I had Mr. Palisi for both Homeroom & English. If you recall, this was during the time of Elvis, Brando, James Dean, etc. Alot of guys(the hoods as my mother would call them) wore their shirt collars up. I guess it was the "cool" thing to do, but my mother would never have stood for one of her sons dressing like "one of those hoods."

So one day, after I got to school, I decided to put my collar up just before walking into Mr. Palisi's homeroom. When he came to my name while taking attendance, he looked at me & said "What's the matter Stiso, didn't you wash the back of your neck this morning?" Needless to say, that was the last time I ever wore my collar up.
One of my English professors in college told me that I had a great writing style and encouraged me to change my major from Pre-Med to English. I remember him asking me where I learned to write so well. I was able to answer him in two words--- Anthony Palisi.

Entered 5th Grade Sept. 1953.

Tribute to Mr. Palisi

I recall a mixed feeling of excitement and uncertainty entering 7th grade at the brand new Madison School in 1953.   Mr. Palisi quickly befriended us all and made learning English interesting and even fun sometimes.  He possessed a rare talent -- inspiring his students to do their very best.  We knew there wouldn't be any shortcuts in his class and, at the same time, we knew how much he cared about us.

I look back now and realize how privileged I was to have been taught by  Mr. Palisi.

I just finished reading the tribute messages sent to Mr. Palisi. What great memories I have of my seventh grade at Madison School with Mr. Palisi and Mr. Schweitzer as my teachers! I have been wanting to write for many months, but I honestly didn't know where to start to describe what Mr. Palisi has meant to me over the years! He was the best teacher I ever had because he taught me  how to be a better person and to find joy in learning. He was so enthusiastic and excited about his subject that it became contagious to us to go on the "adventure" with him! I learned that I could take great pride in doing my best, and that anyone could succeed if they chose to do so. I had such immense respect for Mr. Palisi that I naturally wanted to please him. We all seemed to feel that way, because I never remember that discipline was ever an issue in his classes.

Some memories of English with Mr. Palisi:
He immediately taught us how to outline, which helped us to take notes in Mr. Schweitzer's class. Remember that we DIDN"T have a book for Social Studies; we just took notes and then had to do"Questions and Answers" for weekend homework. Mr. Schweitzer made history "live" without books! Learning to outline helped me the rest of my school years, and still is invaluable to me.

Mr. Palisi was "Pal-is-I" and really was a friend as well as a teacher. He made us each feel special and important! I think we share a similar birthday (March 8), because I vaguely remember that he called me his "twin" that day. I thought that was really neat!

Do you remember:
"The rat ran   (blank)   the stove." where the word you put on the blank is generally a preposition (over, under, to, from, into, etc.)
What about " thermafordiscant" and "usa- confused" as the names for the compound subject or predicate structures (house on its side) used in digramming sentences?
Is "Birds fly." a sentence? How do you diagram it?
Did you learn how diagramming could help with punctuation and with knowing if something was in the objective.

I remember Mr. Palisi's squeeky shoes--those that he delighted in making extra squeeky on test days when he would wander around the room.

I also loved "Prose and Poetry" with Edgar Allen Poe, "The Christmas Carol" and "The Courtship of Miles Standish". Remember the file boxes of vocabulary words that he had us keep?

The wonderful cartoons he used to illustrate the differences in types of verbs, the cannister of "snakes" (Fred Sonntag talked about that too), and the unexpected approaches Mr. Palisi incorporated into his lessons, made English exciting. I looked forward to going to his classes, even with the constant dread that I might have to diagram a sentence on the board. He was so wonderful!

Jimmy Cook talked about Safety Patrol. Mr. Palisi was our supervisor, and we took the job very seriously. We reported for duty with our white safety patrol belts that were bleached so much that some were almost brittle! I didn't remember that Jim was our captain. Our reward at the end of the year going to the circus in Madison Square Garden didn't compare to the pride we had of being on "the team". That attitude came from Mr. Palisi!

I am so grateful that I had Mr. Palisi as a teacher! You taught a shy young girl that she could do anything she wanted to do! My life has been a testimony to the basic things I learned in Seventh Grade English class with Mr. Palisi!

I just viewed the DVD and I'm so impressed with how you were able to capture all those wonderful memories of my two years at Madison School.  I was in the 7th grade when Madison School opened in 1953.  The shots of the hallways and classrooms and Mr. Palisi's narration bought back so many wonderful memories--Mr. Palisi, you, John and the whole crew have to be mighty proud of the finished product.  I know I'm immensely proud to say I was a student at Madison School.  And so very privleged to have been taught by such extaordinary teachers.  What a wonderful keepsake this is.  Thank you all for re-capturing those moments.

Wow!  What a wonderful DVD.  It was the best $10.00 I ever spent.  You were right Joyce, I not only shed a tear, I cryed the entire time I watched it.

Thank you so much to the team who put it together and made it all possible.  The choice of music was so appropriate.

How great to see and hear Mr. Palisi again.  I still think of Miss Royer every time I drink orange juice.  She told us you have to chew it to neutralize the acid, but of course I think of her and then swallow it straight down.  Funny the things you remember.

What a wonderful treat this was.  Joyce, you customer service is outstanding (coming from an old Customer Service Manager).  I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I.  Have a great summer.

The Madison School vdieo on DVD has been a big hit.

Send YOUR comments on the video to the message page!!!

You can get a copy of the DVD by emailing Joyce Hudock Boos at

jwboos@roadrunner.com

Here are some of the comments we've received.  Even got the one from Bob Hampson, who didn't go to Madison.

From Deb Harvey:

"Hi Joyce! Sorry it took me awhile to get back to you. My dvd arrived and I can't describe what a thrill it was to see my old school and to hear Mr. Palisi's voice again after all these years. I just can't imagine anyone viewing the video and not reaching for the Kleenex more than once. What a treasure! Thank you for sending it so quickly.

Two photos on the video jumped out at me - the girls softball team pictures - one was the Eagles and the other the Tigers. I played on the Hawks team and I'd like to know if there's a Hawks team photo that has survived the years and is stashed away in someone's attic. Any suggestions on how I could find out?All my old photos, yearbooks and mementos were lost in a fire many years ago. Maybe that's why I love looking at pictures that bring back the memories.

Thank you again!"

------------

From Joyce Tortoriello:

"I received the video today (thanks Joyce Boos for such a quick shipping of video) and I did not know that it would bring tears to my eyes.......I thought it was great.  Johnny & Mr Palisi, you did such a wonderful job capturing the moments of yesterday and all those great memories of our youth......was put together very well.  I rushed thru it quickly because I am heading down to Point Pleasant this evening, but will view it more thoroughly tomorrow night.

The ending song MEMORIES, was just perfect and so true, beautiful words in that song......"IF WE HAD THE CHANCE TO DO IT ALL AGAIN, WOULD WE, COULD WE......and indeed we would.

Thanks so much for bringing back so many many wonderful memories of those wonderful days at OUR MADISON SCHOOL.

Mr Palisi & Johnny, I just loved this video and am so glad I was a part of it.

Hope to see you all again soon......perhaps we can do a Madison School reunion............just a thought.

Thanks again,

Joyce Tortoriello"

---------------

And this one from Bob Hampson:

"I just recently had the chance to view the Madison School video you and Dr. Polisi co-authored.  I'm constrained to say that I was amazed at both the professionalism and the personal editing that it displayed. I'm frank to say that both Dr. Palisi's narration and your considerable video talents combined to make it a memorable, quality keepsake to treasure.

While not a "Madisonian" myself...(I was a product of the local St. Mary's School), I was immediately brought back to those yesteryears that so bespoke of a thorough and personally caring education. Having  (fortunately) had my High School education at Rahway High, I remember the kind of teacher calibre that was the norm in those days, when without additional financial compensation, so very many of our teachers went on to further their respective educations with advanced degrees. Just looking at the rostrum of elementary educators at Madison clearly supports this observation. Just amazing. We were so very lucky to have been so positioned in our education.

Well-deserved kudos to you John, for your considerable personal and professional efforts expended here. Likewise to Dr. Palisi for his imagination in fostering such a project which shall stand as a tribute to a time of educational excellence. Finally, I would be remiss, in not remembering the interest and contributions of Dr. Jim "RC" Cook who sorta "let the cat out of the bag" in an early conversation with me regarding the overall concept for such an undertaking. It has quite obviously come to be a labor of love for each of you, and for yet others of whom I am now ignorant.

It is fitting that the products of such an education have now conspired to  produce such a loving look backward.

I remain in your individual and collective awe.

Yours most sincerely,

Robert G. Hampson

The Video is READY!

A short documentary, Madison School, The Early Years, was filmed on location on October 5, 2008, during the weekend of the Rahway 150 year all class reunion.  The 5 hour film day was accomplished with the help of former students reminiscing about their memories during the opening of this brand new school.  Despite working with an ad hoc film crew and limited equipment, the film makers believe those who see this DVD will step back in time and fondly relive some of their earliest Madison School memories.  The 15 - minute documentary was co-written and co-produced by Anthony Palisi, who narrates the film, and John Ludwig, RHS 62, who also directed and edited this piece.

The price of this DVD delivered is $10, which covers some of the production and handling costs.  Any monies above the production cost of this DVD/project will be credited to the ongoing cost associated with the Madison School website.
Please send your donations to
Joyce Hudock Boos
8 Depot St.
Harrison, Maine 04040.

A big thanks and much gratitude go out to all who made this documentary possible.

Regards,

Since Jim Cook mentioned Roosevelt School teachers, I just had to post these final comments on the Madison School website.  Thankfully, I did not have Mrs. Armstrong for kindergarten, because she scared me, too.  I had the much, much nicer Miss Lucadamo.  Then, like Jim, I had Mrs. Alden for first grade, followed by my all-time Roosevelt School favorite:  Mrs. Kurtz, for second grade.  Many years later in high school, when a group of us played basketball at Roosevelt (constantly), we'd often see Mrs. Kurtz leaving the building.  She never failed to greet us by name- amazing!  I'd have to say that Mr. Lundgren (5th grade) was my close-second favorite teacher.
Again- thanks for allowing me to "crash" your website.

Hi Steve,

Actually, for many of us, our first 4-5 school years were spent at good ole' Roosevelt.  I still remember the staircases to the second floor on both sides, where we used to sing Christmas caroles.

I started 5th grade when Madison opened; still have a good feeling for the teachers at Roosevelt though:  I had a crush on Mrs. White in 4th grade.  Mrs. Alden was my 1st grade teacher, Ms. Fiverson, and my arch enemy: Mrs. Armstrong (the most unsuited person to be teaching kindergarten--or, to be fair, perhaps I was the most unsuited student for kindergarten).  I'm not sure why, but my first year of school I had the worst teacher of my 20-odd years (slow learner).  It was all downhill from there...in the easy sense.

I remember Roosevelt and Madison Schools as nurturing places.  The Junior High wasn't built when we finished 7th grade, so we went directly to high school for 8th grade.  At first we thought it was cool to be going to high school, but soon we realized just how small, immature, and insignificant we were when the "SENIORS" walked down the hall.

Good to hear from you.

I hope you don't mind a Roosevelt school-er crashing the Madison School website like this.  Upon entering the "cosmopolitan" world of Rahway Jr. High in the fall of 1965, we discovered other students actually existed outside of our sheltered, Roosevelt school universe.  After an apprehensive start, it was actually pretty nice getting to know you Madison school-ers.  The Franklin and Grover Cleveland school-ers weren't so bad, either.

An Idea.

As we develop this web site, we are looking for variety in the Pages, topics or items that might be of interest to those of you who come here and take a look--to want to come back and take another.

With that in mind, I'd like to see if there is any interest in starting a new Photo Album on the site, one that might be called Before and After:  with a photo from elementary school and one that is relatively recent.

I don't view this as a beauty contest, just an interesting segment where one can see how we have evolved.  You have to admit that one of the things that draws people to reunions is to see just how old classmates have changed, how life has left its imprint.

I've found that seeing the pictures of our alumni at the video shoot was just plain interesting.  The years change us, yes, in ways that sometimes make us shake our heads, yes.  But the years also add depth, character, and wisdom--all of which are registered in our visages.  If there are enough Madisonians that agree, let's start it.

At this point, this is just an idea.  If you have thoughts on it, reply by adding your message to this message page, reply to me, or send you comments (and/or photos) to:

madison.rahway@gmail.com

If we get enough interest, i.e., photos, I'll start the new Page....but I ain't putting mine up there without lots of company.

I look forward to hearing from you on this.

Kudos to Rich Stiso for his tenacity in contacting those of us in the 5th grade in 1953.  We think we have successfully put names to all the faces of Mrs. Griffith's 5th-grade Halloween photo.  Take a look and let Rich or me know if we got any wrong.  It's tough enough remembering faces, let alone with masks and costumes.

We have several other class Halloween photos in our album....anybody want to tackle putting names to faces?

In the left-hand column click on Photo Albums, then scroll down to Student/Classroom Activities, then click on Click to View Slide Show. We think we have correctly identified a number of students, but look at all of them just to make sure we have identified them correctly. E-mail me at dr.stiso@usa.net. Thanks for your help.

Mr. Palisi just emailed me and told me that Mr. Spencer had worked in the high school, and that Mr. Potts, our principal, lured him to Madison.

I didn't know that you and Wayne were interested in cycling.

Curious coincidence, I bought my first bicycle, a montrous chrome Schwinn that must have weighed 50 pounds, from Wayne--probably in 1955 or so.  My dad gave me the money and I paid him back with my Elizabeth Daily News delivery boy earnings.  Can't believe I delivered papers with that big bike.  But it was a real beauty.

I just read the articles about Freddy Spencer.  This gentleman was a real friend to me & Wayne Tobin.  In 1957, we were juniors at RHS & both decided we would become "olympic cyclists!"  After all I ran Cross Country & Wayne was a really good hockey player.  So we asked Freddy to "advise" us on equipment & training.   Freddy was quite patient with us but we had no idea what we would encounter during the 1958 Rahway Centennial Bike Race.  With our 2 decrebid "English Racers", we lasted 5 laps before we both collapsed behind the bank on Irving Street.  Only then did we realize how grueling a short 50 mile race was!

What a nice man Freddy was.   He was & is an inspiration to me (and I'm sure Wayne as well) to this day!

I attended Madison School from '69 through '75. I think my class actually retired every teacher that has been mentioned earlier...:) Mrs Cashen, Mrs Josephson, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Roach, Mrs Ritter and my first crush, Mrs Simpson. :) Who was the only one we didn't scare off. Since I lived dircetly acrss the street off of Elm Ave. on Inwood Place, it was a second home to me...Looking back, as someone mentioned in an earlier e-mail our expriences weren't special because of "things"...they were special because of the relationships we shared. The best of times...

Take a look at the photos we've added from the Oct 2008 reunion.  If you took any photos, or if find some old ones when you're going through your old photos in shoe boxes, why don't you upload them to the site--it's easy.

Just go to the Photo Album page and scroll down below the old picture of the school where it says "Click  here to upload photos".   Just follow the instructions from there.

Also, several people have sent in their "Stories" of the Madison experience and "ALUMNI" bios.  We're hoping that we an collect many more of these.

Eventually, we hope to put the stories in a collection, in some written format--maybe a book.  So, the Stories you send to us are more than just nostalgic memories.

By the way, because we just started this web site, we're open to any suggestions for improving, clarifying, and making the web site easier to use.  Just send an email to madison.rahway@gmail.com .

WOW! What a day.  Day started with lots of caffeine and sugar, thank you Ed and brother for the coffee and donuts.  We students were in good hands, with John Ludwig and Dr. Palisi as directors of a film shoot that would bring Hollywood to their knees.  RHS students filmed and dragged equipment from room to room, thank goodness for youth.  They had to leave, with still more shooting to do, thank goodness for the class of "61".  Fred Sonntag, put the camera on his shoulder, did you have to call Rich Stiso, for an adjustment..LOL..the rest of the guys took up the slack, and we finished.  To be with John, I lived at 1049, he lived at 1015, what a priviledge to be in his company, his vision and enthusiam was uplifting.  Also, to be in the company of the teacher that gave me me nickname.  Thnak you, ALL, for the memories.  If memory fails me, I will be able to watch the DVD, thank goodness for technology.  Ruth Hardy (Lambert) Roofy

Full of patience and humor.  I have not been back to Madison School since I left way back wehen and as soon as I got to the 2nd floor all the memories came back to me.....Mrs Rhodes 4th grade, Mrs Griffith 5th grade Miss Royers class, Mr Schweitzer and of course Mr Palisi.  I felt like a kid again going back in time.  That was the finale of a wonderful 4 day event that weekend. I am looking forward to the finished results that Johnny and Mr Palisi worked so hard at creating.   Ruth Lambert is unbelievable with energy that I wish I had.  So reliable and hard working.  Thanks Ruthie. I started in Madison School in Sept. 1959.  Entering K in Ms. Vannort's class.  Then I went thru the 6th grade.  I entered the Junior High and then I became one of the Forgotten 9th Graders.  They re-did the school system in Sept. 1968 - changing the school to be K-5th Grades - Grammer Schools - then the Middle School for the 6th-8th Graders.  Then the High School for the 10th-12th Grades.  OK - what happened to the 9th Graders - which was me.  We had to go back to the second floor of Madison School for some classes and then walk under a tunnel to the High School for some classes.  We had 7:20 AM Gym then Home Room - which we all were in rows in the High School Auditorium.  I will always remember my years at Madison School.

Sorry, Mr. Palisi, my English teacher, the statement about the lawn mower incident had a misspelled word.  Did you catch it, of course, you did.  The lawn mower threw, not through, a rock..."Roofy"

I have so many memories.  One that stands out, while walking to Madison, I had to walk passed RHS.  While walking, the lawn was being mowed, the mower through a rock, and it hit me on the inside of my left leg.  Went to the nurse, she called  my mother, who at the time was working at RCA, now its Kmart and Pathmark, St. Georges Ave., Avenel.  Took ten stitches and several days out of school.  Got my nickname from Mr. Palisi.  He signed my yearbook, 1956, with a picture of a house, and signed his name on the roof.  Looking forward to Oct. 5th, and going back.  All my kids went to Madison,  Mark, now 40, broke alot of records during gym class.  The twins, now 34, were one of seven set of twins, while they were there.  Todd, now 43, was the tallest while he was there, now 6'3".  A "61" classmate was a teacher there, Dorothy McCall, now deceased.  My memories didn't stop when I left.  A memory of RHS for me, came through Christopher, class of "91", second born of the twins.  He came home from school beginning of June and announced he would graduate valedictorian, WOW...More, to come but, another day...Roofy

I consider myself goaded, Tom.  I really wish I could be there.  I'll be out of the country--the reason why I can't make it to the reunion and the film shoot.

Now, if Ludwig would give me the lead role and first class, round-trip fare from Thailand, I'd come back.  Oh, I'd need my own trailer, of course.  :-)

We've already got at least 7 or 8 folks signed up.

It really sounds like it'll be fun.  I'll be sure to be available for sequel:  "Madison School, the Retirement Years"

One would think that Jim Cook would find the time and make the effort to take part in Mr. Palisi's
big cinema extavaganza. If this sounds like I'm trying to goad him into attending, you'd be right.

Think of it, Jim, this will probably be your last
chance to take part in something like this. It's been 50 years since we've been in Madison and I
know for certain that none of us will be here 50 years from now.

PS..anyone know if Mrs. Griffith is still with us?

Our class was sent from Franklin School to Madison School for the 7th grade in 1953. We were than sent to RHS for the 8th grade and beyond. I remember having to paste our photos into our yearbook (I still have it stored in a box with other old photos).  I did make new friendships that have lasted for over 50 years.

I have mixed memories of Madison.  Mostly Mr. Sweitzer referring to me as "Flash" (Flash Gordon) for my insane idea that someday we might land on the moon!  Imagine that!

I was so bad my parents sent me to Admiral Farragut Academy to "straighten me out" but they got tired of me there & I landed in Rahway HS.  I remember a lot of those kids.  Those were innocent times as can be seen from the yearbook reprint!

That was more than 50 years ago. You really expect me to remember much of anything when I can't remember last week? Seriously, those were
fun years (except when my father had to keep me in line a few times, the ol' meanie.) and I still main-tain contact with a few of my classmates from back then. Along with the Rahwayhigh web site I'm
sure it'll help bring some long lost friends back
together. How am I doing, Mr. Palisi, any mistakes so far? See some of you in October.

What a wonderful site and a job well done.  I was so happy to see a picture of my fifth grade class with Mrs. Griffith.  So many happy memories from that school and a great education.  Thank you for all your hard work.  Ginny Pavelec Granata

This is a great idea brother Jim! I also have fond memeories of Madison School from playing on the play ground to conveying messages back and forth between our great teachers Mr Palisi and Mr. Schweitzer. I also remember the "callenge" of diagraming sentences thus I became a Physical Education teacher. It was a wonderful school with Mr. Potts at the helm.Somewhere..someplace I have a Halloween photo from Miss Stevensons's class. Actually I can still see it in my minds eye.
Thanks so much  to all of you for this website. This is so cool. Jeri

Hi Joyce,

It's great to have this web site to reminisce about the wonderful days at Madison School.  I remember them as the most exciting and encouraging of all my years in the education system.

I've got some stories that I'll be sending that hopefully will show why I think Madison School was a special place.

We are indebted to Dr. Jim Cook, Joyce Hudock Boos and John Ludwig, among the original corps of students opening Madison School in 1953, for their vision, their efforts and their creativity in getting this web site up and running.  We are also indebeted to Charles Knight of www.rahwayhigh.com, Alex Shipley, Rahway historian,  Frank Buglione, current Rahway schools superintendent and Fran Gavan, current Madison School principal, for their invaluable assistance.
   Now, let's diagram those sentences.
